Eqilibration

Equilibration is the dental term for shaping and adjusting the bite. Improper stresses on the teeth can cause loose teeth, pain upon chewing, jaw joint pain, headaches and gum line damage (abfraction - loss of tooth structure). There are specific pathways that the teeth must follow for the jaw muscles and the teeth to be in harmony. When the teeth and muscles work together, the oral structures are protected. If the teeth shift or tilt this harmony is lost. This can be caused by periodontal disease, abscesses, previous tooth loss, high fillings or crowns.

The process of equilibration starts with a careful analysis of specific biting pattern. The dental hand piece is used to meticulously refine and shape the teeth until they are back in harmony. Decay and gum disease are still the most frequent cause of tooth loss but stress or trauma from your bite is the greatest contributing factor. Equilibration is a safe and effective means of preventing a chain reaction of destructive events and restores harmony to your bite.
